A Reason I Love My Q

It plays SNES games. Try that on your iPhone.

But in all seriousness, this is definitely one of the strong points of the Q, and it’s operating system (Windows Mobile 5 for Smartphones), 3rd party apps are not only supported, but encouraged by the architecture. I mean, why play java-based cell phone games when you can run a SNES off your smartphone?

That’s where PocketSNES comes in, I don’t think just any version will do, it has to be optimized for the Q, which has problems with some standard-compatible WM5 apps. It runs quite a few games (not Final Fantasy 3/6 though :( ), mostly at full speed if you disable the sound, which is probably a good idea anyways seeing as how most of the other people in that train car might not quite appreciate the musical stylings of F-Zero, or Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Short set-up guide after the jump.

First off, you need to have tGet installed, it’s basically a file browser framework that alot of games and 3rd party apps use instead of file manager, if you already have this installed for another program, like PocketNES, then skip this step. It can be found here, although you’ll have to register (highly worth it if you own a Q). Installation is simple, unzip and run on your desktop PC with your Q connected and activesync or it’s equivalent installed. [Note: if installing in Vista, you need to run the program as administrator, which can be done by right clicking on setup.exe and hitting the relevent menu item. Also, you would have Windows Mobile Device Center instead of activesync.]

After that, you can go ahead and download this file, which is PocketSNES itself. Simply unzip and place in the desired folder on your Q by using the file browser on your PC.

Use the file browser on your Q to locate SNES (I think it’s a .cab, but that’s irrelevant). There you go, now you’re running a SNES off your phone, the rom files (games) can be placed anywhere on your Q’s storage, I’d tell you where to find some, but that’s illegal.

And there you have it. Stay classy, Internet.
